Italians and Australians dominated
the last day of Olympic track cycling in the Velodrome. Russell Mockridge
of Australia won gold in the 1,000-metre time trial and joined forces
with countryman Lionel Cox to take another victory in the 2,000-metre
tandem race. Track cycling did not draw crowds in Finland: only about
two thousand people attended the competitions in the Velodrome on any
given day.
Russell Mockridge of Australia defeated Italy's Marino Morettini for the
gold in 1,000 metres time trial.
Enzo Sacchi of Italy had shown best form in qualifying heats of the sprint
competition. He was joined in the final by Lionel Cox of Australia and
Werner Potzernheim of Germany. Sacchi edged out Cox to win gold, and the
German settled for bronze.
Pesäpallo, Finnish baseball, was a demonstration sport at the Helsinki
Games. A game was played in the Olympic Stadium in front of 19,000 people
between teams of the national pesäpallo association and the Worker's
Sport Federation, won by the former 8-4. The inventor of the game Tahko
Pihkala threw the opening ball of the game. Swedish, French and English
commentary was provided for foreign visitors on the loudspeaker.
